Aesop

Brooklyn's streets shaped Aesop long before the galleries came calling. His visual language draws equally from hip-hop's golden era and classical design—Renaissance composition meets the album art that defined a generation.

Coming up through New York's graffiti scene gave him a fluency that formal training alone can't teach. There is a bust of Nefertiti in Berlin that has been looked at by more strangers than most of us will ever meet, and in every one of those looks the crown does half the talking: tall, flat on top, entirely sure of itself.

Here the crown is hair, and hair has rarely been a neutral subject for a Black woman. It has been measured, ruled on, sent home from school, and asked, politely and otherwise, to take up less room. This one declines. It rises straight from the brow and is cut level across the top, as if the matter were settled long ago and nobody had thought to tell the rest of us.

Her face says the remainder. She is not waiting for your opinion. She has heard it.
